What are the benefits of the School Breakfast Program?

The School Breakfast Program helps students to fulfill their nutritional needs and practice healthy eating habits on a daily basis. While many children often skip breakfast, the School Breakfast Program ensures children are not missing the most important meal of the day.

Who is qualified for the School Breakfast Program?

School Breakfast Programs benefit ALL children. It is a program designed for all students regardless of their economic background.

What are the costs of the program?

Most if not all costs for schools to implement the School Breakfast Program are reimbursed by both federal and state funding.

What are the minimum USDA requirements for a school breakfast? The USDA requires the minimum of

A serving of milk

A serving of a fruit or vegetable (of full-strength fruit or vegetable juice)

Two servings of bread or bread alternate or

Two servings of meat or meat alternate or

One serving of bread or bread alternate and one serving of meat or meat alternate

How can state school breakfast funds be used?

In addition to covering costs, School Breakfast funds can be used in the school food service operation to improve meal quality and upgrade inefficient or outdated equipment in the cafeteria. Funds can also be used to offset program deficits, expand and promote program benefits to increase participation and to ensure that state aid monies for education remain in the classroom.

How can I get the School Breakfast Program implemented in my school?

Contact the local school district business administrator and ask for the program to be added to their current Child Nutrition Program contract with the state. Or if they currently do not have a Child Nutrition Program contract, they can contact the state to get a program started.
